Swamimalai - The Swamimalai Temple neat Thanjavur is built on a 60 feet high artificial hillock. The 60 stone steps represents the Hindu cycle of 60 years, Here, Lord Murugan expounded the meaning of the Pravana mantra OM to his father Lord Shiva. The temple has a dazzling golden chariot.
Pazhamudircholai - This shrine is located on the northern outskirts of Madurai in a pleasant wooded hill not far from Alagar Vishnu Kovil, a fortified temple complex revered as one of the 108 abodes of Vishnu glorified by the hymns of the Alwars. At the top of the hill , is Noopura Ganga, a perennial waterfall with a temple dedicated to Rakkayi Amman. The Noopura Ganga a top the hill is said to originated from the anklet of Tirumal or Vishnu and hence the name for the spring. It is said that sitting in the madavi mandapa near the spring Ilangovaigal wrote one of the five mahakvyas in Tamil, Viz, Silappathikaram. Even today the place is very fertile with many trees and different flora and fauna, a standing testimony to the vivid description of the place’s natural beauty as found in the days of Nakkeerar.
Thiruparamkundrum - Thirupramkundrum is a cave temple built on a hill near Madurai and dedicated to the element, earth. Murugan was married to Devasena here and for many centuries this has been regarded the most auspicious place to conduct marriages. It is referred to as the place where the sun and moon abide. Various classical Tamil texts refer to this as the Southern Himalayas’ where the Gods assemble.
Thiruchendur - This 2000 year old temple is the only one of Lord Muruga or Arulmigu Subramanya Swami located in the seashore. He was believed to have camped here before and after defeating the Asuras. He worshipped Lord Shiva at the shrine Mayan had built for him. The foundation of this temple was laid on the kanda madana parvata or the red sandstone rock of this coast. A portion of the cliff was bored into to create the holy sanctum for Subramaniam. The temple also has a huge tower of about 140 feet.
Palani - This ancient Palani temple was built in the 7th Century AD by King Cheman Perumal and was later added to by the Nayaks. It is located at an elevation of 1500 feet above sea level. The deity of Palani is known as Dandayudhapani Swami, the lord with the staff in his hand. Siddha Bhogar skillfully crafted the deity out of an amalgam of nine minerals popularly called Navabashana.
Tirutani - The most prominent of the Murugan temples, this beautiful Tiruttani temple crowns a single rock 700 feet above sea level. His righteous indignation towards the Asuras was quelled here and so it is known as Shantipuri or Abode of peace. It is said that if Murugan worshipped here with heart and soul for five consecutive days, the worshipper is blessed with the best in this life and after.
