It is believed that Parvathamalai is formed when a piece of rock fell from Sanjeevi hill when Lord Anjaneya was carrying it and this has seven folds. So it’s also called as Sanjeeva Parvathamalai. There is a 2000 year old Shiva temple on top of the hill. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Mallikarjunaswamy. An Ashram (Mounaguruswamy Ashram) is under construction next to the temple on the top and free food (Annadhanam) is provided to the visitors.
Parvathamalai is a hill standing tall at approximately 4560 ft above sea level. The hill is located south-west to Chennai close to Thenmathimangalam village in Thiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu about 20 Km from Polur which in turn is 35 Km from Thiruvannamalai. Kadaladi which is about 25 Km north of Thiruvannamalai, is another route to reach the base of the hill.
The "Kadapaarai padhai" is considered to be the toughest part of the trek, the climb was very steep on the barren rocks and this stretch is bit difficult. It is punctuated by iron rods drilled into the rocks and chains to assist for a sharp ascent.
This hill is an ideal place for birding and is also popular for its medicinal plants.
